36 Months?

 Hello

I was wondering if anyone could help me clarify something in regards to the experience section of the application. It requires 4500 hours, which I meet, but it also states 36 months of experience. My question is this: I have the 4500 hours, but my months only add up to 29.  Do I have to add 7 more months of projects to meet the requirements?

Thanks!

Yes, you need to have 4500

Yes, you need to have 4500 hours plus 36 months of non-overlapping experience (with bachelors degree). You need to satisfy both requirements.

Technically, 4500 hours can be obtained in 29 months. If you worked 40 hours a week for 52 weeks in a year, you would get the 4500 hours in 26 months. Including the days-off and assuming that you work as PM for 100% of the time, you will be able to get your 4500 hours in 29 months.

However, PMI wants you to have the 4500 hours and 36 months.

Additionally, you do not have

Additionally, you do not have to be a project manager during that whole time. You simply need to participate on projects, you could be a team leader on a project or a designer, or any other role that diretly involves you in direct participation with the project. Obviously the more the leadership and management role the better when audited, but most people who have worked through several projects over the time frame can find some way to legitimately justify their time as counting towards PMP requirements.

Scott is right

Some people say that for PMP you need to have project managment experience....and its wrong. Scott is correct, PMI expects you that you should have worked in projects and handle it some way or the other.

Say, in a project A, you just worked on execution. On a project B you worked on initation and planning. On a project C you worked on M&C and Closing.....These are all valid cases.

Just make sure, you show some time to PMI in each process group. You may say that you did not work in initiation (as an example), but if you look back closely, you will find you did work on it. Kick off meeting, discussion on design, stakeholders introduction, some documentation approval etc are all part of project initiation.

You know what, in reality everyone participates in all project process group, but we do not know it. Every deliverables can be seen like a project.

Please post more questions if you have any confusion on this. If I get a chance, I will try to answer it.

All the best for PMP. :)
