What are the pros and cons for a Project Managerto be closely involved with the development of the business case for a client's project, assuming the PM works directly for the clients organization.

I am assuming that the situation is that PM is an employee of the company and the same company is the sponsor of the project.

Pros

  1. Good understanding of business case, hence will be able to drive the project better

  2. Interactions will stakeholders will help understand their perspective

  3. Can determine how sure the people are about the end result they want to achieve.

  4. Can enfore definition of some metrics which will enable measuring throughout the project lifecycle. This metrics will tell if the project is achieving the business case or deviating from the same. This is the most important thing for any project. The PM must manage the project through data and facts.

  5. PM based on past experience can suggest what would be likely timelines, cost , etc, this will help the sponsor plan things better early on and it will set expectations

Cons

  1. There could be some bias during execution stage when PM has some though decisions to make. PM may overlook some finer aspects of management .

  2. PM may not have the domain knowledge , but since he was participant in developing business case, there is a chance that he may be pushed by sponsor in future for Changes, meeting cost /schedule etc.
