Confusion Between Milestone chart & Bar Chart
Submitted by rahulraxx on Fri, 12/17/2010 - 08:20
I am confused by the way contradicting statements have been mentioned about Milestone charts and Bar Charts in PMBOK and Rita Mulcahy's Exam Prep.
Rita's book mentions that Milestone charts are used to report to Management due to their uncomplicated way of potraying performance whereas Barcharts are too detailed in nature and hence are shared with the Team. ( Pg. 214 - Rita )
PMBOK mentions that Bar charts are used to report to Management. ( Pg. 157 - PMBOK )
Can someone in this forum shed some light?

It depends on the context,
It depends on the context, Bar chart will be detailed when compared to milestone chart. So for reporting to Sr. Management , it maybe preferred over milestone chart. However it does not mean that bar chart cannot be used to report to management. Where ever required you can always used Bar charts to report to management.

Who is the stakeholder?
Yes, consider the audience when using any diagram. Your project team needs more information than the sponsor or external stakeholders. My general rule of thumb is to provide enough information to accomplish my goal, but no so much as to generate inquisitive calls.
Usually sponsors want general information like 'are we meeting targets?' They should receive milestone, or high level, charts in this case. If the sponsor needs more information s/he could be provided a more detailed bar, or Gantt, chart.
