Critical Path doubt
Submitted by jason on Fri, 08/08/2008 - 14:46
Hi Forum,
The following is a practice question from a pmp class I attended sometime ago. I have forgotten the reason for the answer. I hope to hear what answer you would choose and why.
An AON Network diagram has these 2 critical paths :
D-E-J-L and D-E-G-I-L.
Except for activity L which has duration of 1 day, the rest have 3 days.
To reduce the project by 1 day, which activity(s) is/are most likely to change? Why?
a. L
b. E or J
c. G or I
d. D or E
regards
Jason

There is something wrong
There is something wrong with quesiton. I can see only 1 critical path DEGIL taking 13 days , DEJL is taking 10 days.
Please check.

DEJL takes 10 days DEGIL
DEJL takes 10 days
DEGIL takes 13 days
So, shaving 1 day from DEJL accomplishes nothing where as it makes sense to remove a day from DEGIL path which will make a direct impact.
the answer would be 'c'
did it make sense? i may be wrong also...

Option D would also work
HI,
Same effect can be achieved by reducing the activity of D or E also which would make DEJL as 9 days and DEGIL as 12 days.
Or may be "most likely" phrase indicates the answer to C.
Or there is insufficient information in the question.

Answer: D Since both
Answer: D
Since both paths are critical they have the same duration, that is the duration of J activity i.e. 3 days. That implies that activities G and I do not have a FS but a SS relation (PDMs support relations others than FS). So, to definitely decrease duration one day (without eliminating L activity) you have to reduce D or E.
Does it make sense?
Cheers and Bye

While all replies seems
While all replies seems logical and reasonable, I have to go with George's answer.
Thanks!
