Diff between WPI and WPM

Hi Saket, Projmanpro et al,

Please tell me what is the major difference between Work Performance Information (WPI) and Work Performance Measurements (WPM)? This is little confusing.

I took Saket and Projmanpro name since both of you always come to the rescue of lesser mortals like yours truly.

Thanks,

KK....

Hi Kranti, thanks for trusting me as one of the person whom you can trust. I have a different style of explaining things as I always see and understand PMP information real life.

Imagine two statements:
1. I am driving my car slow because its speed is 40 KM/H
2. I am driving my car slow because its speed is 40 KM/H and in this road condition I can easily drive with 60 KM/H

Let’s related these with your questions with PMBOK definitions:
1. Work Performance Information are Information and data, on the status of the project schedule activities being performed to accomplish the project work, collected as part of the direct and manage project execution processes (40 KM/H).
2. Work performance measurements are used to produce project activity metrics to evaluate actual progress (40 KM/H) as compared to planned progress (60 KM/H).

I hope you understand it now, please let me know if you need any other inputs on this.

Saket, PMP

Are you a teacher Saket Sir? I am asking because the way you explain is similar to the best tute style and this is second time you made me understand something which was not getting into my silly head :)

The first time it was when I had aksed how come deliverables are an ouput of DMPE and should it not be MCPW only.

Thanks so much!!!

KK....

These two are really confusiing if you dont understand their very nature according to how PMBOK described and defined them. In my understanding, their difference is as tiny as the hair. My collegue saket_pmp's analogy is absolute right and clear.

To add:

Here are the considerations: In general context, both are actully bits of information. (That's why understand their definition from the context of PMBOK.

Focus more on understanding WPM. If u understand it well, meaning all other info outside of this are WPI.

WPI tells us specifically about this:

✓Status of deliverables
✓ Implementation of change requests
✓ Corrective actions taken
✓ Preventive actions taken
✓ Status of defect repairs
✓ Forecasts for estimates to complete
✓ Percent of work actually completed
✓ Technical achievements
✓ Actual start and finish dates of schedule activities

While WPM - take the baselines and compare them with the actual performance to develop quantitative measurements of progress

In simpler understanding, WPM has a touched of "measurement related to baseline"

For example: Lets investigate this sentence:  "You have 8 of 10 widgets built, and the variance analysis shows that they are built correctly. You are 80% complete with the work."

Which sentence tells us purely a bit of information, and which tells us something with a touch of measurement? Obviously, the last sentence is WPM, while the 1st sentence is WPI.
