Here is a question from Headfirst..
The CFO of a company tells you that you need to include a new feature in software that’s being produced by a
project you are managing. The deadline for the project is tight, and if you take on the extra work then the project
will come in late. What BEST describes the first thing that you should do?
A. Update the project plan to make sure the new feature is included in the project
B. Tell the CFO that he needs to wait until you’re working on the next version, and then submit a change request to
the change control board
C. Tell the CFO that the deadline is too tight, and the feature can’t be included
D. Evaluate the impact that the change will have on the project

I thought the answer is C but correct answer is
D as per Head first Book.
In the question, it clearly mentioned if the additional task is taken, project is considered to be coming late. Not sure why again project manager is assumed to reevaulate the impact.. any ideas ??

First thing you must always
First thing you must always do is analyze the impact of the change on the triple constraints of the project. Then you can present to the CFO the impact to schedule, cost, etc. If they are willing to accept the impact then the deadlines will be extended and the change will be accomodated.
However when the project is in closure phase, then you can ask for the change to be included in next version.
