What is purpose of risk response 'Avoid', you are not ready to take risk...in this case you are moving the schedule instead of mitigating the risk with current schedule. This indicates you are avoiding the occurance of a event or condition. Since it is threat than it should be Avoid.


 


In case of Opportunities it would be Exploit.

 We are not able to confirm whether moving the schedule it avoids/eliminates the risk. The risk still exists.

 MITIGATE RISK

Since the PM is just reducing the risk and not completely eliminating the threat. PMBOK page .303 -304

if there is a risk in project you should not take it in order to avoid it -

 Since the question says reduce threat, would the answer be 'Mitigate Risk'

 Agreed, you are reducing the threat, you are not eliminating it which is what avoid risk results in.

 answer is "avoid risk" but I am not convinced completely...

Here, you are changing the schedule entirely to avoid risk. It is more of a drastic means, than anything else you do to mitigate it - like negotiating with the line managersfor resource, or gathering support for your project. Eventually with this approach you are avoiding the risk (to quite a degree)

 

Additionally, think of this point. When you do anything with the baseline, (or anything that sounds drastic), think that it is risk Avoidance. This fact will help you get correct answers on the exam.

 

if the answer the avoid risk - I guess here it is why - resources are not available - so whats the risk - miss the schedule - so if we change the schedule overall - the risk of missing the schedule by resource un availability is completely gone -- i.e avoid risk - I guess the PM has to plan for an extent - and control it while execution - I don't like this question

The answer can be develop schedule also - because resource calendar is an input to develop schedule process .

If I consider resource un availability as threat - mitigation is the right answer

the situation is not saying change the resources or saying that change the whole plan.

 

Reducing the risk by tweaking the schedule is example of Mitgation,  We are just reducing the probability however risk remains there.

Well if i consider myself as a project manager facing resourcing issues, considering increasing schedule is not a good idea. It would be considered as buffering which is NOT acceptable. Ideally a PM should look to mitigate Risks. But question mentions that PM has increased schedule. So let's consider that case.

Risk Avoidance- Changing PM plan to avoid risk completely

Risk Mitigation - Reducing Probablity or Impact or both

If I decided to increase the schedule does it avoid the Risk? Yes, it will as it mentions getting resource "on Time" .So  a PM will know say a resource might be unavailable for say 5 extra days at max so he would change PM plan accordingly and avoid the Risk.

However increasing schedule does it mitigate Risk. No.

Hence answer is Avoid Risk

 Avoid

When you avoid the risk it means you change your plan to completely eliminate the probability of the risk occurring or the effect of the risk if it does occur.

 

Mitigate

Risk mitigation occurs when you proactively change the plan to minimize the impact or probability of the risk occurring. Risk mitigation does not eliminate the risk and as such there will be some residual risk remaining.

 

If I were the PM, I would look for more info to consider it a "Avoid". Suppose my team is travelling on X date and the same day their is union strike in the city and team might not be available to complete the work (estimated to take a day) and I "avoid" this by changing the schedule .

 

Otherhand, team is busy in predecessor and scope change in "propossed state" might delay its completion, in this case, just to "reduce" the probablity I will extend schedule of my activity for few days to possible mitigate the risk..

 

 Avoidance will/should make the risk/impact not probable.
