Need Clarification.

You are managing the implementation of ERP software in a factory. Software support must be provided round the clock. You need to schedule the shifts of the crew in such a way that a crew cannot finish their shift until next shift crew has arrived. What type of dependency exists between the shifts?

I have answered as "Finish to Start".

My justification :- Predecessor is "First Crew" Successor is "Next shift Crew"

But the correct answer is "Start to Finish"

Can someone explain this ?

Kindly refer PMBOK 5.

Page no. 156...

"Successor activity cannot finish until a predecessor activity has started" ...

PMzilla server timedout.

PMBOK doest mention anything except definition.

Example 1:

The same definition we can apply to the Security Incharge.

The first shift security person must start pack-up formalities to leave the shift
until second shift security finishes formalities of undertaking incharge of second shift.

Example 2:

This only applicable when Successor activity has lead time equal to both of duration.

Activity A = 3 days   Jan 1,Jan2,Jan3
Lag        = 5 days
Activity B = 2 days

                            3                   2
                          -----     Lead 5  -----
              Start--->| A |------------>| B |---->Finish
                           -----                -----

Activity A must start after activity B finishes.
Here Activity A starts on Jan 1 and Activity B must finishes on Jan 1.

Example 3:

Its applicable only round rabbin fashion which activities in loop.
like 12 hourse duty security shifts.  shift1 8.00 AM to 8.00 PM.
shift2 8.00 PM to 8.AM.   Here upto your choice choose which shift is predecessor activity and which one is Successor activity.

Finally, i conclude this type of relationship applicable to LOOPs(GERT).

It is only hypothetical relationship for projects.
It is exist in the only Process (continues).
It does't exists in the Projects which has Start  and End.

It always doubt on this relationship until PMI-PMBOK has to offficially announce this applicable for Loop or Process.

If anyone has openions, please share it.

Thanks,
