SPI question

This was a question from certchamp.

Your project has a budget of $240,000 and is expect to last for 1 year, with the work and budget spread evenly across all months. The project is now in the fourth month, but the actual work completed is 20% of the total work. What is Schedule Performance Index (SPI) in this case?

A)1.66

B)1

C)2.5

D)1.9

Can somebody explain how A is the right answer.

Thanks.

How can 1.66 be the SPI while the progress is behind? A is not correct.  There is no correct answer from the givrn choices :-)

 SPI = EV / PV

EV = 0.2 , PV = 4 / 12 = 0.33

SPI = 0.2/0.33 = 0.6  NOT 1.66 that equals 0.33 / 0.2

0.6is correct, however ur solution is quite misleading.

Here is the detailed and correct solution.

Given:

Project Budget = $ 240,000 to be spreaded evenly across all months for a year. Taking into consideration the condition and given, we can also say the the BAC at 12th month is $240,000.

Situation: present date = 4th month

EV = 20% x $240,000 = this is from the formula EV = % work x BAC

EV = $48,000 (at 4th month - this is implied )

PV (each month) = $240,000 / 12 = $20,000

PV @ 4th month = $20,000 x 4= $80,000

Required: SPI

Formula = SPI =EV/PV

SPI = $48,000/$80,000

SPI = 0.6

Note: EV = Earned Value

PV = Planned Value

* I saw in some websites, they term EV as estimated value, while PV = present value. This will create confusion, avoid websites or reference like this. Refer to PMBOK when it comes to terminologies.

By the way sampath... my friendly advice, beware of question like this, i dont want to say against certchamp, but in a practical point of view, as the reality speaks.. it may only confuse your mind which must be at peace in order to pass the actual pmp exam.

Just a quick question on this. When you say “beware”, is it because the question level quality is not up to your expert and high expectations?

I have used certchamp along with many free PMP questions available across and passed PMP.

When I see WIKI pages for PMP I see as of now there are more than 400,000 PMP certified professional and around 4500 people growing every month. Do you think PMP is that touch exam with these numbers? The way words scanning is going on and debate whether the glass is half full or half empty, do you not think that level of discussion is not really needed for PMP Questions to answer in real life?

To my knowledge and as per my experience too, PMP exam is for average people who are into project management, the exam targets common and average project managers across all domains and across people from various corners of the globe.

I am worried because, if we show to the PMP aspirants this high level of discussion and super expert PM knowledge their motivation would fall down as a new aspirants would never talk to the level this discussion is going on. PMP in reality is not that tough exam and hence there are 400,000 PMP certified professional today. PMP exam has many simple questions, many one liner, many simple situational. Such questions are framed considering average people and considering basic project management knowledge. There are so many real success stories where people have passed PMP with basic study and using free and low cost material too.

Success and failure is part of life. An Expert can fail and a fool can pass too. If success is because of X and another fails because of X, X is not the culprit. If you paint your face black and see in the mirror you would see black face, and if you paint your face white and see in mirror, you would see while face. Do you blame mirror for the face colors you see? You should not, right?

This is just my thought; you are expert…no doubt about it so you can correct me if I am wrong. Other, PMP certified people, what’s your take on this? Is PMP that tough the way it’s being presented here?

Thanks all of you for your time.  Now i have understood the quality of Certchamp!!!!!!!!!!.  And, i am sorry if i have wasted all your time.    I pretty much understand i should've thought myself, before posting on the forum and wasting others time.

Thanks all of you.

you are 4 months through a 12 month project, so you should be at 33.33% complete

You are actually at 20% complete

It should be 20/33.33=.6

but they seem to have the formula reversed.  33.33/20=1.66

Cheers

I came across this question and ignored the answer.  I know the answer is a mistake.  If we are getting free stuff, we should compromise on quality little.

Enjoy preparing PMP.
