In general Project management practice a project is divided in to the phases for effective control. What would be the criteria based on which a project can be divided in to the phases? When it becomes necessary to divide the project into phases?  Can somebody provide an example on this?

And when providing the final result of the project how the result of each phases is combined to deliver the customer or sponsor.
