Need advice on study plan for exam on PMBOK 4th ed.

Hi, I work in IT as a system analyst for around 6 years with IT project experience. I just started reading Rita's eLearning. Due to busy work commitments, I am able to spend around 10-12 hours each week (ie. around 8-10 hours on Sat & Sun and around 2-3 hours during weekdays after work).

I am planning to finish eLearning (which actually includes reading the chapters of Rita's book) and reading PMBOK by mid-June, then spend around 2 weeks to do practice exams.

As I know PMBOK will be changed to 5th ed on July 31st, 2013, just wonder if I should schedule for exam at end of June / end of July? Or should I prepare to study PMBOK 5th ed. instead of 4th ed. now?

Would appreciate if anyone can give any advice or comments. Thanks!!

Your plans and expected study durations are nothing different from any working person. As most of the expert say, a working person can keep 3 months of time and even if he is an average person, he can prepare well and clear PMP exam.

My advice is please target the exam for July end and start preparations from today itself using pmbok 4. From 31st July exam will change with pmbok 5, but I am sure, the same old questions based on pmbok 4th will be available across for 1-2 months.

Rhythm is more important, once you start taking interest, even 2 months will be sufficient to try the first attempt.

 Thanks!!! :)

Get your date and place , at the earliest for last days of July. otherwise at 11th hour you may miss all.

getting ability to pass depends on your prepration and calibre .

it is risky,

test yourself @ every 15 days by mock test according to your study.

Hi,

Since many people want to complete by July 31, getting seats will be tough later. So, get the exam date confirmed NOW. Target around 4th week of July.

I too had a 3 month constraint and completed it last week. My LL here:

Use the right material, Dont wait till June to take the mock exams.

I just started preparing project experience verification. So I will schedule the exam date after submitting the application and PMI approved it.

 That's good tip

 Hi Aussie,

You could come up with a plan either in MSP or P6. This tools will guide and help you track your progress. Like I am writing my exam soon, what I did was to come up a WBS of all the knowledge areas in PMBok and break them down into various activities as per days. Really, this has help me as I run my schedule on a daily basis. Try it you won't regret it.

Good luck,

ITK

Thanks a lot for your advice!!

I just cleared my PMP exam today with 4 Proficient and 1 MP (Closing). I prepared using PMBOK 5th Ed and Rita Mulcahy 7th ed. The questions covered almost every concept mentioned in PMBOK 5th ed. I am not sure how different the exam will be after July.

Good luck.

Raghu
