Passed PMP exam - new format

Hello Friends,

I am watching and following this forum since long time so thought to put my experience as well and then go for Party. I have cleared the PMP exam the second time. I failed in early July 2013 and decided to keep over a month of time and focus on PMBOK 5 materials. I do not see any difference in PMP question with what it was before 31-July and as on today. Say 95% of questions still remains the same and it really does'nt matter if you are still with books and materials of PMBOK 4. I passed with 3-MP, 1-P and 1-MP and here is my preparations that I did:

Books Read: PMBOK 5, Rita 7th and Headfirst (based on PMBOK 4)

Mock Exam: Pmstudy, Pmpforsure, Kim Heldman, Christopher Scordo, Exam Central, TechFAQ360, www.bestsamplequestions.com, Oliver's , Head First's etc.

Also read: I made notes on IITO that is based on PMBOK 5 for quick revision and read many times even before entering the exam hall,

Advice - Do not worry much and wait to hear more and more success stories from people on PMBOK 5. The PMP exam is same and even if you are prepared with PMBOK 4, you can make it. Concentrate on PMBOK 5 reading, as I did notice lots of questions based on PMBOK line extracts. Please make sure you try the free test from Pmstudy and Pmpforsure (Pmbok language) as they are really close to the actual exam. Dont worry what scores you see in mock exam, as long as you make lesson learnt and find gaps you are all done with it.

Congrats Yadav.I will take the exam on Sep.1st,btw how much questions u got on calculations in the exam.

Hey antonyvd,

Not much man, say around 10-12 question on total. I did see about 4-5 questions based on network diagram on float, Critical Path, LS, LF etc.

There were like 20-30 long situational questions, say for 4-5 lines each.

I am confused with the term "line extracts".

I think "line extracts" are words or phrases taken almost exactly the same as what we've read on the PMBOK 5th edition. This is why some of the LLs suggest that we read the PMBOK at least once or twice to become familiar with the words, phrases and terminologies that are in the PMBOK.

GSA has rightly said the meaning of line extracts, in fact I heard this term from this forum members itself since I am watching this over 3-4 months. :)

I did notice many questions in the actual PMP exam from PMBOK book line copy especially from its summary and few questions that are direct and they ask for the definition or something like "what is this called" etc.

I would definitely recommend people here read PMBOK once as most of the people say and I did experience the same.

 Yes, 95% or so the questions should remain the same, there is no major difference between PMBoK4 and 5. 

Most of the changes are around clean up and clearing confusions. So in that sense it has become easier , since the terms that used to confuse earlier are  not streamlined  - Eg: Verify scope is now Validate Scope

Addition of Stakeholder management area.

Thank you for the feedback, it is a great one, I did attempt in July as well but I failed, the time was my issue ad the Math Q.
I think it is the best way is to avoid the math Q and leave it till the end, What do u think?
what do you think about the Q that are in the bank here in PMZilla?

Hi, I also failed on July . I also leave the Math Q for review, But I feel it is difficult at the end. The best thing is to face it. Do as many formula qsn as you can to get the correct ans and reduce the time taken for this Math Qs. - Raj Kumar

I passed PMP exam the 2nd time and honestly I did not see any tough question related to Math. There were like 10-15 a total but those were easy for me. It could a highly a reason that being a second timer, I am into PMP learning and preparations for over 6 months.


If you have seen questions from Rita and Headfirst books on Maths, this would work for you. Mock test from Pmstudy, Pmpforsure will also cover many Maths questions. I did notice many new tricky Maths questions in Pmpforsure exam this time, it was not there earlier when I used it 2 months before.


Do not worry much for Maths questions as its not much in numbers. Reading Rita and Headfirst along with Mock test practices will be sufficient enough.

I have failed twice in May and July..So lost fully confidence.... in me inspite of reading so much hours together..So tuk 2 months gap.. and back to study..As of now not wrking.. want to deviate from development to Mangement... So now I have all with pmbok4 th editions buks Rita,HF,Pmbok4 & 5 .. sme knowledge wood mock ups... So Last time I ahve been lagging in mock ups..thinks so..Now my i will ry my best with lot of mock ups... ths time i cannot take any chnace.. as my date application expires on Dec 11.

Hello Rashmi,


Do not get dishearten so much. Success and failure is all part of educational life. By now all good providers have upgraded their PMP book to support PMBOK-5, I would recommend use new version along with PMBOK-5. I would recommend you take PMStudy and PMPForSure Mock test. PMPForSure tests are tough and they have framed questions using PMBOK language, I strongly recommend you to try that and see how you score in it. Also take some tough tests like Rita, PMZillla and Oliver.


For you around 30-40 days of preparations should be good enough and I am sure you can make it by 11th December.

I am planning to take the PMP exam this year and I am not sure how to judge if I am prepared or not.

I have taken multiple mck exams - RIta's , Oliver, PMStudy , PMPForSure , Headfirst , Kim Heldman, Christopher etc. In all the exams I scored around 65-72 %.

Can I please request you to advise me if I am ready for the exam or not?

 Dear Friend,

          Give a reading to PMBOK and try to fill gaps and take the mocks again and make sure you list all the gaps aside and try to see where you have missed the knowledge in that question. All the best and Im sure your scores will go high and reach in 75-78%.

I would say, yes, you are prepared for the PMP exam based on the tests you took so far. Getting around 65-70% in tougher exams like Rita's , Oliver and PMPForSure is good. However I do see you should look for 75% score in others like PMStudy, Headfirst , Kim Heldman, Christopher, Simplilearn, TeahFaq360 etc.

Thanks a lot. I want to know one more thing like after one has uilised all the free mock exams available on onternet. Do one need to buy a practice exam simulator?  Taking those exams again means you know some of the questions as they get repeated. And then your scores are lil more higher.

Can I also request you to tell us in this forum like what is that you did not during the first time and you feel that could have helped you passing the exam in the first attempt?

Your inputs are really imporatant for us.

This is completely your personnel choice whether you would like to go for buying some paid mock test or not. No paid tests would meet the quality of PMP exam questions (honestly), However if you take them to find gaps, they will help you. Not all free tests that are available across have even acceptable average quality. You can buy the one that you find would help you to find more gaps. Again, this choice is yours.


I failed in my first attempt mainly because I was not well prepared to face the Prometric Center. It was more nervousness and fear that spoiled by knowledge and confidence in the exam hall.
