Project, Program and Portfolio

 Dear All, 

As I am preparing for PMP, I am reading PMBOK and trying to simulate it with my current work and culture.

I am trying to understand from my personal experience but I want to validate it.

Based on my current enagagements. following is my understanding about project, program and portfolio

Please correct wherever possible 

Portfolio – Organization XYZ having strategic company objective to gain 1 Billion $ revenue

Portfolios  consisting of following items

1)     

Project  1– recruit more and more sales people

2)     

Subportfolio  2 -  ERP projects

3)     

Subportfolio  3 -  CRM projects


a.      

Program (3.1) - CRM project in Real Estate domain


                                                               i.     

Project – Real estate project for  client 1


                                                             ii.     

Project – Real Estate project for client 2                               

(inter- dependency management in program management so that modules developed for client 1 can be sold to client 2)


b.     

Program (3.2) – CRM projects for Insurance companies

Interdependency between subportfolio 2 and sub portfolio 3 – integration of these two systems for few clients

No interdependency between Project 1 and others

There is a line in PMBOK – What does that mean if I relate to above example

“Projects within a program are related through the common outcome or collective capability.

 

If the relationship between projects is only that of a shared client, seller, technology, or resource, the effort should be managed as a portfolio of projects rather than as a program.”
