Question on staffing issue when project almost ending

Hi people,

What does PM do during almost project ending, surely there are people going to dismiss or reassign to another project, who will take care of this?  PM or HR

The releasing resource should ideally be the last most activity of the project during closure. PM must ensure all closure activities are done by the project team. The responsibility of closure process lies to the PM and hence PM should keep his resources to do closure activities.

HR is a project independent entity. When you talk from project management, it’s the PM who has to do HR roles for his allocated resources. The PM might release the resource from the project, in that case the resource is assigned to the program/portfolio manager account (top hierarchy of the same project). The program/portfolio managers always try to keep their resources in their own account (same account but different project).

A resource on bench i.e. either a newly hired resource or total free resource (never good) comes under HR bucket.

Hope this clears.

Hi,

Thanks, this is very helpful. This question did appeared in the PMP exam which I took on 4 Aug, Yes, i chose the answer on PM to take care of the staffing issue. I have confidence to pass the exam with the questions attempted but when the result was out FAILED and all rated below proficient. I was so shocked. I don't know what went wrong....

Not everyone pass PMP the first time. Try next time you will pass. You have seen the real 200 PMP questions so take your time and try all good recommended mock tests. If required purchase the one that you find tricky and difficult to score high.

Stick more to PMBOK especially its IITO and summery pages. You might try another attempt in a month.

PM is responsible to make sure that resources are properly released during/end of the project. This is part of adjourning in team development. PM should also work with HR department, to define future assignment for team members in order to maintain high morale within team, till the end of the project.
