Conflict Question

Hi everyone

The correct answer for the below question is (d. Confrontation)
but i 'm not confident from this answer, anyone can help

9) Which type of conflict resolution style is strongly unfavorable for Project manager when he is having the conflict with his supervisor
a. Forcing
b. Withdrawal
c. Compromise
d. Confrontation

Thanks in advance.

if the question about strongly favorable then the answer might have been D. But looking at the question as it is I will go with A.

thanks for your answer, but why B and Why A.

Confronting : “Confronting” refers to confronting the problem – not the people and this is also known as  problem solving  technique and is the best way to resolve conflict.

Compromise : Compromise is achieved when each of the parties involved in the conflict gives up something to reach a solution.

Forcing : One person forces a solution on the other parties. You can put it this way "I’m the boss, you’ll do as I say, or leave the project. " Although this is a solution, it isn’t necessarily the best solution.

Withdrawal:  Withdrawal  never results in resolution. This occurs when one of the parties gets up and leaves and refuses to discuss the conflict. It is probably the worst of all the techniques because nothing gets resolved.

By above explanation and based on your question i.e strongly unfavorable for Project manager when he is having the conflict.

In this scenario the best option will be B i.e Withdrawl where no solution is found and it is unfavourable for the Project Manager when he is having a conflict.

I hope this clears your doubt. Also please read Jimmy Owens tips on Human resource which is a pdf file easily available when you google it.

I will not answer the question yet. But i will give u guys probing questions and this will surely help u decide which answer is correct.

With all the given situation in the question:

1. Would there be wrong if the project manager force issue resolution of a conflict with his sueprior? Is the project manager in the position to force that resolution? If he does these actions, would it be the worst unfavorable?

2. Would there be wrong if the project manager withdraws the conflict with his supervisior?

3. Would there be wrong if the project manager compromise with his supervisor to resolve the conflict?

4. Would there be wrong if the project manager confront the conflct with his supervisor? Is the project mangaer in the position to initiate the confrontation? if he does these actions, would that be storngly unfavorable?

So guys, were these questions helpful for you to understand the question and lead to the correct choice. So what is your choice now?

DEAR FRNDS

Withdrawal is strongly unfavorable, because a pro manager should be a problem solver as a most favorable style. It is win win situation.

Forcing is a better than compromise and withdrawal because, it is win -loss situation. For a instance it is an problem solving in Pro Manger Favor.

Compromise with supervisor (subordinate ) is not a favorable style but it is little loss -loss situation to dilute the issue and to move forward with little loss. It is not better than Confrontation(problem solving ) and Forcing.

But withdrawal have completely escaping away from roles and responsibility and Totally a loss situation in favor of PM. Supervisor may also be in loss situation.

Hence Most unfavorable situation is B - WITHDRAWAL

The question is about such "strongly unfavorable" FOR THE PROJECT MANAGER, and NOT FOR THE PROJECT'S SAKE. This is something to understand from the question.

If answer is B = withdrawal, then let us examine. If the project manager withdraw the conflict, would this be strongly unfavorable to him? This should be the validating question to know whether or not our answer is correct according to what is asked in the question.

Project is relying on PM .the meaning is same. Withdrawal with a supervisor means not justice with the need of the project.

I disagree dude, a project has many stakeholders not PM alone. In fact, a PM can be terminated and be replaced. Dont you realize what is the role of the supervisor in the project? this context has something to do with the question and how we would select the correct answer.

To examine the question, here are what we need to understand.

1. The question does not specify that "conflict" in particular, so that we can say, it must be forced, withdrawn, etc.

2. The "supervisor" is mentioned, which has a big bearing on the context of the question. It can be thought of that the setup is somewhat like a functional organization where the PM is reporting to a higher manager (supervisor) and that he has no authority at all.

Then forcing is most unfavorable.

Confrontation = problem solving in all cases will be the most favorable, perhaps question have some grammitical/ human typography mistake.

Regards

Yes, sspawar, it seems that forcing has the worst unfavorable consequence to the PM, given the situation of the question. Let us examine:

Since the project manager is reporting to a supervisor who is implied to be higher in position and authority over him, is the project manager in the position to "force" resolution of the conflict over his supervisor? Is it not an insubordination? if his supervisor thinks of it as an insuburdonitation and an assault, then the PM might be recommended for termination by his supervisor haha!
