Confusion: difference between project charter and SOW

What is the difference between project charter and sow

 

  1. charter provides high level scope and sow provides business need
  2. charter formally authorizes the project while SOW describes products & services supplied by the project
  3. charter identifies the required project processes, while sow describes a preliminary project plan
  4. charter will identify the dependency of operational work, while SOW will describe processes to be used by project

 It is B. but A also seems correct. In option A, charter provides high level requirements and SOW provides Business need too.

SOW is input to charter so both charter and SOW provide business need. The question asks difference between the two

The Answer is B.

According to PMI the Project Charter is the Formal Authorization of a Project. Without a Charter you do not have a project. The SOW is the "description of the products and services" PMBOK v4 pg 75 and will reference the Business Need, Scope Description and Organization's Strategic Plan.

It's also important to know and understand exact PMI terminology so for option C as an example, PMI rarely uses the term "preliminary project plan". Project plans can be updated at any time as and when required (progressive elaboration) so the need for a "preliminary" doesn't exist.
