Newbie to this forum and PMP Aspirant

 Hi All,

I am a newbie to this forum and a PMP aspirant.

I am going through Books, articles on net to know more about PMP but i am not sure how should i start preparation. And even before preparing, how to go about filling that lengthy form.

So experienced folks out here...Please help me in this.

Thanks in Advance.

Gauri

Start by confirming if you have required experience and qualification to sit in exam. It is mentioned on PMI website here http://www.pmi.org/Certification/Project-Management-Professional-PMP.aspx

Then get PMBOK 4th edition which is the official course book and start reading it. Please note PMBOK 5th edition will be out in Jan 2013 so only go for 4th edition if you plan on giving PMP exam before July 2013 because after that exam will shift to 5th edition. I will highly recommend that you go for 4th edition because you have lots of books, resources and mock exams to practice.

Apart from PMBOK you can read any other book such as Rita and Kim Heldman to get more in depth knowledge of PMP.

You can also try HeadFirst PMP which is a very good book for beginners.

Then practice by giving a lot of mock exams which are freely available on internet.

Thanks aliweb for your helpful reply. How much time it typically takes to prepare for exam, based on that i'll have to decide whether to go  for exam before July 2013 or not. If i start preparing this month, will it be sufficient time period to appear for exam in jul next year.

Typically it takes 2 to 3 months (sometimes 4 months) to prepare for the exam so according to that you have plenty of time.

 Hi Gauri,

You can visit the following link for guidance on PMP exam application process to PMI: http://www.pmi.org/Certification/~/media/PDF/Certifications/pdc_pmphandbook.ashx. You have to have the 35 contact hours necessary for the PMP exam, which you can either have by joining a classroom program or taking the online training of training providers like PMstudy.

You can start your preparation by going through PMBOK, then you can join a classroom training program of a training provider like PMstudy, PMTI etc so that your knowledge of the subject is reinforced as well as you can get the contact hours needed for the PMP exam.

Then you can schedule your PMP exam and can go about it.

I would also like to suggest you to take PMstudy's training because in comparison to other training providers, its great and its very very effective way to prepare for PMP exam with their materials.

All the best for your preparations. Wishing you a fun filled festive season ahead.

Chris

 Hi Gauri,

I totally agree with Chris' view of how to prepare for the exam. The materials of PMstudy is very much helpful in preparing for PMP exam. I would also suggest you to focus on your own efforts as well, so that you can do extremely well. I have taken the bootcamp of PMstudy and will be giving the exam shortly and I am very much confident of making to the lists of PMPs in the first go itself.

All the best!!!

Jeff
