schedule reserve
Submitted by vijayavadrevu on Fri, 06/14/2013 - 14:51
A project has a schedule reserve of 28 days when the customer adds scope not previously planned for. The change has a 40% chance of delaying the project by 14 days. What should be done?
A) Look for ways to cut 14days of work from another activity
B)Add 5.6 days to schedule reserve
C)Add more resources to the project
D)Plan to add 14 days of overtime to the project

A?
Since this is related to change manangement and the evaluation of the impact has been already mentioned in the question, then the next step is to find out the options to see if the impact can be worked out with schedule compression (crashing, fast tracking etc).
Looking at this I think the option A should be appropriate then go for next options.

Time is the essence of the
Time is the essence of the Contract. Therefore, any Project Sponsor would not prefer to enhance time for this approved change but prefers to give compensation for any of the Schedule Compression techniques, unless it is evaluated of its impact vis-a-vs time extension at this point of time.
Therefore among the options listed, i also would go for A

Is there no importance given
Is there no importance given to 40% chance of delay while answering?
How does it make sense to reduce 14 days scope of work when the chances of delay is only 40%?

Option A
Option C and D can be easily neglected, Now out of A and B, as per EVM one can add schedule buffer of 5.6 Days but prior of that look for the way to cut the schedule from another activity is must. Hence A comes first.

Clarification for choosing B
I agree with cnppmp's approach for tackling change management. But my reasons for choosing B were the following:
1) Option A talks of reducing 14 days of work, but no where is it stated that the task being reduced/ fast tracked is on the critical path. Also fast tracking would introduce additional risk and rework, given the fact that we are already pressed for time, this doesn't seem logical
2) Option C talks of adding resources (crashing), but no where is it stated that the affected tasks are on the critical path
3) Option D ruled out as this is increasing the schedule, we are accepting the schedule overrun without acting on it
Am I missing something here?
