Passed PMP on First Attempt, 3 P's & 2 MP's - Lessons Learnt
I am happy to inform you all that I have passed PMP certification on 15th July with 3 P's and 2 MP's. I was a silent visitor on PMzilla and have benefit a lot from Lessons Learned posted by many. Sharing my Lessons Learned below so that it benefits others. It was 2 months preparation (Mid May 2013 to Mid July 2013)
I had been thinking of doing PMP for quite sometime but was never serious. I had enough excuses in my head to avoid preparing for PMP. Few excuses that I thought were job and that my 3 year old kid would not let me study at home. But I had seen many with kids and busy job schedule have cleared the exam. So had to overcome all these excuses and all of sudden in mid May 2013 I decided to prepare for PMP. I checked the REP (for 35 PDU/training) which many friends recommended and found that their batch was starting the next day. Without giving much thoughts I just went ahead and registered this REP on the same day when I decided to take up PMP. This must be one of the quickest decisions of my life..Not sure from where I got the courage. After spending money on REP, you tend to commit yourself to this thing, as lot is at stake (your money/your goal). REP training gave the picture of what is needed to be done (from where I have to begin and where I have to end). However Training programs are not going to do any magic, and everything depends on your own preparation and studies.
Study Plan
Following is the sequence that I had ended up following.
1) Head First - Read once. Gives an easy to understand picture of PMP. Its fun to read this book.
2) Rita Mulcahy - First Read. Read in detail. This is a wonderful book. It has lot of verbose but it actually makes you understand all the Project management concepts. You will truly dissolve yourself in to Project Management if you read this book. Earlier I had a fear, how can one memorize ITTO (Inputs, Tools & Techniques, Outputs). I was very uncomfortable and was sure that I cannot memorize ITTO. However reading Rita, I could understand the entire concept and then felt there was no need to memorize ITTO.
3) PMBOK - It was never easy to understand this book when I first tried to read it. But after reading Rita, I could digest PMBOK very well. Earlier I thought I would avoid reading PMBOK. But after I did some Mock test and also learned from others LL that questions/answers were very much in PMBOK language, then I felt that I should atleast read it once. Trust me reading PMBOK atleast once is very much needed. Every line of PMBOK is precious.
4) Rita Mulcahy - Second revision. A quick run through on selected chapters where I felt I need to read more.
5) PMBOK - Second and Final revision. A quick run through.
Mock Tests
I had Rita Fast track with me, which is a good mock. I discovered many good mock tests from the Lessons Learned in PMzilla. I recommend everyone to refer to the Mock test list given in Lessons Learned by Rajesh Thallam. He has given a very good list of Mocks and rated them too.
http://pmzilla.com/passed-pmp-dec-13th-2012-%E2%80%93-5p%E2%80%99s
I recommend everyone to do as many Mocks as possible. And do include few full length mocks to judge your timing. I am a slow reader and take my own time to fully understand the questions, so I end up taking full 4 hours for 200 questions with no time left for reviews. I thought of many strategies to save time but they never helped and on my real exam too I ended up chewing up entire 4 hours to complete 200 questions.
Here were my Mock scores (In order of attending them over 1.5 month period)
Head First - 72.5%
PMstudy test 1(free) - 70%
Rita Fast track 1 - 70%
Oliver 175 (Tough questions) - 66% <<<<tough questions
Oliver 175 (Tough questions) - 72% <<<<tough questions
Rita Fast track 2 - 73%
Christopher Scordo 7 to 12 - 76 to 86%
Christopher Scordo 13 to 18 - 60 to 80% <<<<tough questions
Farndale - 73%
Rita Fast track 3 - 76.5%
PMStudy test 3 - 83%
Exam
During the exam, I finished tutorial in 5 mins and used the remaining time to right down the formulas on paper. However I never read them during exam as these formula's were dissolved in me and were easy too.
Exam was nor easy nor hard. It was easier then Rita's lengthy questions. You can say it matches to Pmstudy questions to certain extent. The calculation questions were easy and straight forward. However they did give additional numbers and information in question, which was not needed to solve that problem.
However as I am slow, I ended up using entire 4 hours without any break. However good thing is that I can handle 4 hours without needing to take break :)
Finally..
Finally the exam ended and screen went blank for 1 min. Filled the survey, when I was worried about what the outcome would be. Submitted the survey and thought it might take another minute or so, but that didnt happen and a screen came up stating "CONGRATULATIONS". I could not register it for a minute and later realized that these were the results. Was very happy that my last 2 months hard work paid off in the end. This would not have been possible without support of my family and blessings from God. More than the pain of hard work, the misery was that I was not able to spend time with my toddler. Thanks to my wife for her support as I could not be of much help during this period and for ensuring that my kid does not disturb me during the studies.
Thank you all and PMZilla.
All the best!!
