Need help in the question.

Q. During Project executing, a large number of changes are made to the project. The project manager should:

a. Wait until all changes are known and print out a new schedule.

b. Make approved changes as needed, but retain the schedule baseline.

c. Make only the changes approved by management.

d. Talk to management before any changes are made.

Could some one tell me the answer with justifiation?

Thanks a lot.

You started a thread with the title Questions. Lot of confusions are there on that question. You left all of us in lurch. Answer that first from whichever source u got the question. Then we will answer this.

The question is from Rita's book. Tha answer mentioned is 'B' (i.e. Make approved changes as  needed, but retain the schedule baseline')

Following is the justification provided in the book.

'A project manager must be more in control of the project than choices C and D reflect. Choice A is common error many PMs make. Instead the PM should be controlling the project throught the completion of the project.'

However I didn't understand how the schedule baseline will be retained if so many changes are made.

Am I missing anything?

I consider that as a trick. Look guys, if you will apply the answer elimination technique, what will be left is Choice B. To viualize this, let us analyze:

1. Is Choice A correct? Definitely not, this is very wrong, so eliminate this choice.

2. Is Choice B correct? The sentence has a correct point, yet confused by the next phrase - "retain the schedule baseline". In the actual exam, if choice is like this, just mark it for review later.

3. Is Choice C correct? The statement is true, however, that does not answer the question as it is only a redundancy of the fact in the question. The situation of the question is that - "changes are already made" and that changes cannot be made unless approved by the ICCB (refered to in the question as the management". Therefore, this choice cannot be the correct answer.Eliminate this choice.

4. Is Choice D correct? The statement could be right, but not in this situation as it is clear that the big changes are already made, meaning approved by the right board. There is no need to talk to the management regarding this issue. So, eliminate this choice.

You will see that the only choice left is B. But since we have doubt, let us analyze deeper. What about the retention of the schedule baseline? Is schedule baseline different from baseline schedule? My understanding, the words "Schedule Baseline"may imply different than baseline schedule. Schedule baseline may refer to the original project scope which are of course retained on records, while baseline schedule is the program itself that needs to be updated once approved changes are made. Quite confusing, yet the most valid choice is B. Choice C could be the next valid answer.

Notice that i have different explanation from Rita :-)

Good explanation. Now we know how to approach the question and answer them in PMP exam

Rita questions are good but their answer choices are bit ambigous. Please expect choices to be much more tangible and differentiable from wrong answers than Rita's coz as someone wisely aid on this forum somewhere that Rita wants us to differentiate from Apple,Green Apple, Greener Apple or Greenish Apple :) but on real exams u may easily eliminate 2 out of 4 and then if you read the other 2 options carefully and apply some logic to it . Vola ! u will guess the answer rite :)

"The results of the analysis can trigger change requests that, if approved, may modify the project management plan or other project documents and possibly require establishing new baselines."
