PMP cleared yesterday 6/8/2014 1st attempt with 4P and 1MP (closing)

Hey,

I cleared PMP today 6/8/2014 on 1st attempt with 4P and 1MP (closing).

Total preparation time 2 months.
I did not memorize any ITTO (expect for Rita's planning process sequence)

The exam was well written and tricky.

I took me 3hrs 45 mins to complete all 200 questions. I spent considerable amount of time on each question. My strategy was to put in max effort for each question so that I wouldn't have to do too many reviews in the end.

The main material that I would recommend is

PMBOK (cover to cover, with a detailed understand of each concept)
Rita guide

Mocks that helped:

PMPStudy
PMP for sure
oliverlehmann
Rita mock exams

Most of the questions were situational
Few ITTOs were tested, you could use logic to answer them
There were EVM and EMV calculations required, some of them were tricky some of were strait forward.
Tuckman ladder questions were spread through out the paper
Risk response strategy was tested
There were many graphs from which you are asked to infer or do calculations to come up with the answer
Many questions on change management. Have to read the question carefully as the situation were different for each question (for some evaluation was done for some evaluation was required, some questions tested on what happens after change control mgmt)

Please let me know if you have any specific questions.

Thanks a lot to Pmzilla team and its members for all the help. This is the only forum i used to get my doubts cleared.

Regards

Congrats :) Well deserved success.
What % did you in the mock tests?

My exam is coming up in this month, I have not yet started giving any mock tests. 1 round of PMPBOK & Rita has been completed and I gave few 30 questions tests till now. Any suggestions durig the last month of preparation?

Hi Jp2786 Congrats...

Could you give some reference for the S curve graph questions??Any material or sample questions

Also how was difficulty of Tuckman ladder questions?

Were there graph questions other than S curve?

Could you shed some light on risk response questions and change management questions?(level of difficulty and best material to cover the gaps)

Encouraging to hear, PMZilla is the only forum you used to clear you doubts

Congratulations. !

Hey, I would suggest taking mocks, PMP is vast and you have to know your strengths and weakness. When I took my 1st mock, I learnt that I was weak in 4 KA. Fine tuned those areas and take more mocks.

So go-ahead and give one.

The most important thing is to make notes of your mistakes and other things that you feel important. I had a word doc that was over 120 pages in the end and was very useful for my last minute revision.

For instance for HR i made notes such as below based on my mock experience:

To answer “resolve conflict question” follow the steps
1. Project manager should take teams buy-in during project planning. Not when the project starts i.e. executing. Or even if you are taking in resources during executing then you need to 1st take buy-in from them as they join.
2. Understand whether the team or the members of the team are fighting i.e. Conflicts need to be resolved by those experiencing the problem not with the whole team
3. Strive for fair resolution of the issue (problem solving best, forcing bad)
4. Identify what they are fighting about (technical activities / project standard etc.)
5. Those having the problem should resolve the problem. The two team members should work out the problem. If impacting the project (the two resources are not able to resolve the fights). The project manager is responsible for communicating what or which activity needs to happen next.
6. If it’s about technical decision or resource allocation you should directly go to their functional manager
7. If its ethic issues directly speak to the manager of the resource

1st point above is derived from a mock questions that gave a situation saying the team members are confused or low moral about their project work. What did the PM forgot to do?

In short, Keep taking mock tests, make notes, fine tune weak areas. Trust me the exam is not difficult but tricky.

@Chullan88,

oliverlehmann is one good option.
The Graph questions were not that difficult. You need to know concept for instance if you see a data point above your control limit you know you have a problem with the process, questions were in these lines.
Tuckman questions were easy, they define a situation and ask which stage you are in. (easy scoring area actually!)
Rita for risk response and change mgmt. Again the questions were not difficult, you have to read the question carefully and may be re-read the question. (I did this in the exam)

For instance, document change , analyze change, identify option, go to CCB, update and communicate response.

They define a situation and ask you to select which one should the PM do NEXT / or NOT DO.

@admin,

yes PMZILLA , FTW. One stop shot for all PMP concerns / questions. I would highly recommend to my fellow colleagues.

Thanks Jp2786

The conflict resolution part was very good....

Congrats JP
