Time management: Lag and Buffer

 Hi Experts,

I met the following question:

If a project manager wants to schedule a delay between activities in a project plan, he/she uses:

a. Float

b. Lag

c. Buffer

d. Lead

I answered b. but the solution showed c. as correct answer.

Is it really correct?

That's what i dont like about this whole thing

Based on our reading we will of course think 'Lag', but Buffer is also a correct answer.

I hope they dont have difficult questions in my exam.

At first look i answered Lag, but buffer is also not an incorrect choice as Buffer can definitely introduce delays.

Buffers are designed quantities of time, sized and applied to a project schedule to protect what is important to the success of that project.  Buffers are non-work schedule activities to manage uncertainty.

Lag time is the amount of a dependency.  It is the time you need to wait after the independent/predecessor task is finished, and before the dependent/successor task can start in a finish to start relationship.  Lag time pushes the dependent/successor task later in time thus increasing the end date of the network path.

it is not so clear to me.. both could be true

The keyword in the question is schedule a delay.

Buffer is a time which a PM can introduce into a schedule to account for any uncertainities.

Whereas lag is not introduced, but it is evolved as a result of dependancy between activities.

thanks a lot AP
